Authenticity verification answers a broader question than AI detection. An AI-generated image is inauthentic by definition, but a real photograph can also be inauthentic — if it's manipulated, if its metadata is falsified, if it's presented in the wrong context, or if it lacks a verifiable content provenance chain.
Since 2021, the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) has developed an open technical standard for attaching cryptographically signed provenance information to images and videos. When a C2PA credential is present and verifiable, it establishes a provenance chain from the moment of capture through every edit step. When it's absent — as it is for most images in circulation — forensic analysis of the file's technical layers is the primary available method.

Absence of C2PA credentials is not evidence of inauthenticity. It means the provenance chain cannot be established through that mechanism, and forensic analysis becomes the primary evidence source. An authenticity assessment is not a binary verdict. It's a convergence of signals with different evidential weights. A strongly authentic assessment requires: no AI generation markers, consistent EXIF matching claimed capture conditions, no manipulation artifacts, verifiable semantic consistency, and ideally a C2PA credential. A strongly inauthentic assessment requires at least two independent signals pointing to fabrication or manipulation.
C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) is an open standard for embedding cryptographically signed provenance records in media files. A C2PA manifest contains: who created the file (identity assertion), when and with what device, a hash of the original content, and a record of every subsequent edit step including the tool used. Verification checks the cryptographic signature chain against the issuing authority's certificate. C2PA is supported by Adobe, Microsoft, Google, OpenAI, Intel, Arm, BBC, Reuters, AFP, and others.
The cryptographic signature itself cannot be forged without access to the signer's private key. However, C2PA credentials can be stripped from a file (the manifest is lost, the image remains), and a C2PA credential only verifies what it covers — an image with genuine C2PA from a camera still needs forensic analysis to verify it hasn't been manipulated after the credential was attached.

It says nothing about whether the subject of the photo is accurately described in the caption, whether the photo is from the claimed date and location, or whether the context it's used in is accurate. Technical authenticity and contextual truth are different claims.
